Gauchos
The last Argentinian Horsemen
Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and some southern areas of Chile share the figure of the Gauchos, a fundamental character in South America’s history, identified as great horsemen and primarily responsible for the proliferation of cattle in that area of America.
Represented by this name since the end of the 18th century, they were vital figures during the wars for the Independence of the southern countries.
Their survival largely depended on this, since they had a semi-nomadic lifestyle in the past, having to cross large stretches of plain to find an appropriate place to settle, that’s why being a skilled horseman is one of the main characteristics of the gaucho.
Today they are the icon of traditions and rural life throughout South America.
